McDonald's 4 Year Old Cheeseburger

cheeseburger_fries.jpgDo you still eat this stuff or let your young kids eat it?

I haven't eaten this stuff in years but remember driving up to a local Friendly's drive through as a teenager asking for cheeseburger with french fries and a coke.  It was delicious to my young palate.  Now I refrain from eating in restaurants unless I know the owners or the chefs who make the food.  I'm a good cook and I usually buy organic.  Well, I do 'cheat' sometimes but I pay the price.

Denise Austin's Exercise Tip For Dancer's Legs

denise_austin.jpgDenise Austin is an American fitness and exercise expert, author, columnist and instructor. She is also a member of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.  I used to work out daily watching her either on early morning tv or my own videos.

Just received an exercise tip in the mail from Denise and wanted to share it with you.  I spend most of my workout time doing Qi Gong and Yoga with a variety of DVD's but there are many people who might want this short quick tip from Denise(5 minutes, 2-3 times/week) on getting 'dancer legs' as she calls it.

I would say its a quick exercise for anyone who wants to strengthen their legs.  I think I'll try it out.  Why not…it's only a few minutes a day.

So How Much Sleep Do You Really Need?

mercola.bmpMore about sleep with Dr Mercola.  Not only have we seen how important good sleep is for our health, now Dr Mercola is saying that its healthier to start our sleep way before midnight.

Ideally we should synchronize our sleep cycles with the sun, so we should go to sleep as close to the sun setting as possible.  Most people don't go to sleep at 7 or 8 at night, so he's just saying that if you go to bed in the middle of the night, it doesn't bode well for your health.

Get Your Sleep Or You Will Be Fat & Sick

sleep_1.jpgDiabetes, heart disease, obesity?  I wrote about Dr Oz's anti-aging check list which included getting enough sleep and also how lack of sleep can make you fat.  Several large scale studies have shown a correlation between lack of sleep and heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke. Again we hear about sleep studies on 60 Minutes tonight.

Lesley Stahl reported on 60 Minutes- sleep research which showed why humans need sleep and the dire consequences when they don't get enough.

Not getting 7-8 hours of sleep every night affects our health in many ways including memory and the immune system.  Stahl reports that in this study, healthy young volunteers had their bodies monitored while their sleep was interferred with for 6 nights in a row.  The researchers noticed after testing that the young subjects were in a pre diabetic state.  On the road to diabetes after only 6 nights of interrupted sleep!

Green Tea's Catechins May Block Fat & Promote Healthy Weight Loss

ginger_root1.jpgMore about green tea, catechins and weight loss.  I've been drinking loose green tea from China for several years, about three or four cups daily with fresh organic juiced ginger.

greentea6.jpgOne day last week, I ran out of my juiced ginger that I keep in a spice jar refrigerated(lasts 2 days) and drank green tea alone without the usual ginger…stomach ache.  I juiced more on the spot and my stomach was peaceful again. That's how medicinal ginger is.  So now we can talk about green tea, weight and fat loss.

The University of Connecticut's Richard Bruno, PhD, RD, and colleagues reported in February's edition of The Journal of Nutrition that green tea might block fat and promote weight loss according to preliminary lab tests in mice.

Drink Milk After Exercise To Gain Muscle & Lose Fat

milk.jpgDoes milk after doing weight bearing exercise really help you build muscle and lose fat?

A study conducted at McMaster University by the Department of Kinesiology’s Exercise Metabolism Research Group found that milk does help exercisers gain muscle and lose fat.

Researchers found that the milk drinking group had lost nearly twice as much fat as the carbohydrate beverage group.  Those drinking soy lost no fat.  The gain in muscle was much greater among the milk drinkers than either of the other two groups.

Bill Maher On Health Care

This is really funny.  Watch as Bill Maher makes fun of the health care and the complete lack of information on preventative health from the presidential candidates.  We know though that we have to be our own care givers when it comes to our personal health.

Weight Loss By Dr Mercola: Proper Diet, Exercise & Brown Seaweed

brown_seaweed.jpgHere's more weight loss help from Dr Mercola.  Of course it includes proper diet and exercise(weight bearing exercise is his choice-mine also) primarily.  I keep hearing, you keep hearing, 'ya gotta move'.  Moving is good for everything.  A couch potato does not fare well for a comfortable healthy future even if it feels comfortable while you're doing all the sitting.

Just 10, 20 or 30 minutes of yoga or qi gong 3 times a week is a good start.  Check out Lee Holden or Peggy Cappy.  They  both have beginner through advanced dvd's that you can use at home.  Lee does qi gong and Peggy does yoga although its amazing how similar the workouts seem to be.

Why Tuning Forks & Nitric Oxide For Healing

"Everyday people and practitioners in the Healing Arts are using Tuning Forks to positively alter the body's biochemistry.  Sound enhances the healing effects of all energy therapy practices."

tuning_forks1.jpgAt my request, a friend and healer came to visit when I needed some rejuvenation.  I was very stressed out that day.  Being a master of Vibrational Healing, he brought Tuning Forks.  After a 30 minute session I sat up with a smile and felt totally relaxed and calm.

I want to thank Michael Kopel for his ease and comfortable style.  Here is his explanation about tuning forks and why, in my opinion, they should be an integral part of your doctor's natural healing modalities:

Nitric Oxide and Tuning Forks
– by John Beaulieu, ND, PhD

Landmark research is shedding new light on the effects of music and sound in relationship to healing and energy. In 2002, Dr. George Stefano and I made an exciting discovery: Specific vibrations transferred to cells using tuning forks causes the spiking of nitric oxide. This release of nitric oxide sets off a cascade physiological events that directly influences our health, well-being, state of mind, and consciousness.

To read more on Nitric Oxide and Tuning Forks, go to Omnivos. Michael's site and click on the education link.  Download the free eBook on Nitric Oxide at the bottom of the article by Dr. John Beaulieu.

What To Do About Toxins In My Body

healthy_foods_1.jpgHow can we tell if we have toxins in our body and what effect do they have on us?

Drew DiVittorio Dipl.,(NCCAOM) states that:

"…conditions such as chronic fatigue, environmental and chemical sensitivities, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, headaches, fertility problems, memory loss, and depression are some of the many conditions associated with toxins in the body."

Drew cautions us about fasting on just water or not eating at all:

"Not eating or fasting on water is NOT detoxification.  According to research, the liver needs specific nutrients to detoxify. Depriving the liver during a detoxification program only produces more free radicals which can lead to a healing crisis or poisoning of the body."

"A safe and effective detoxification program requires specific nutrients to enhance the liver's ability to remove the harmful toxins stored in the body."  Read more on how to rid your body of toxins at Asian Healing Arts Institute blog."

Green Tea & Other Secrets of Self Healing

secrets_of_self_healing_dr_mao.jpgDr Mao(Dr. Maoshing Ni), author of Secrets of Longevity: Hundreds of Ways to Live to Be 100 and Secrets of Self Healing wrote about tea as The Elixir of Life:

green_tea.jpgIt is no wonder that tea is the beverage most commonly enjoyed by centenarians around the world. Tea is full of powerful antioxidants that improve concentration, gently boost energy, and make people happier. The free radical-inhibiting property of tea is more potent than that of vitamin E, and tea is a proven preventive and treatment for atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). The polyphenols in tea, especially the catechins, are powerful antioxidants that help ward off diabetes and cancer.

Diet Soda Can Increase Risk Of "Metabolic Syndrome"

diet_coke1.jpgGreat taste. No calories. Wholesome ingredients. How could you drink too much?

This is a question from Diana Garza, a spokeswoman for Coca-Cola North America.  What do you expect, the woman works for Coco-Cola.

People find it difficult to give up a habit, especially if they love it.  It's hard enough to stop something you know is 'bad' for your health and most people aren't even aware of the facts.

We like to ignore things we don't want to change anyway  and when you really like a drink or food and if it has caffeine, you're surely addicted and then it's really not easy to stop.

Artificial Sweeteners May Increase Weight Gain

sugar_free.jpgDoes drinking low calorie or diet soda really insure that you will lose weight?  That's why you buy the diet stuff, to lose weight or to at least make certain that you don't gain.

Registered dietitian Diane Quagliani thinks that its a myth that diet sodas cause weight gain.  She has written several nutrition articles for Better Homes & Gardens, Weight Watchers Magazine,  Diane has also appeared on CNN, MSNBC, Phil Lembert’s Supermarket Guru and more and is a former spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association (ADA) and reviewed the ADA’s position paper on Food and Nutrition Misinformation.

Here is what Diane answered about the so called 'food myth' that diet sodas and “light products” cause weight gain.

Drs D'Adamo, Oz & Roizen Speak About Genotype Diet

dadamo_oz_roizen.jpgDrs Peter D'Adamo and Mehmet Oz on Oprah & Friends TODAY!  They will speak about his latest book, The Genotype Diet and I'm sure something about weight loss.   Find what time and how to listen to the interview.  Here are Dr D'Adamo's own words from his blog right after the interview:

Spent a pleasant morning yesterday with Mehmet Öz, his lovely wife Lisa and Michael Roizen. Mehmet has a radio show on XM that I was a guest on. I think it will air sometime mid January. Michael is the author of the ‘Real Age’ series of books, and together with Mehmet, they wrote a bestseller called YOU: On A Diet. Mehmet’s wife Lisa was also part of the show. It was an interesting hour, and I was surprised by how much leeway I was given to go into some of the more technical aspects of the book. Both these guys are doctors and when their gears are turning you can see that they almost forget that they are doing a radio show.

Can Losing Sleep Makes You Fat

getting_enough_sleep.jpgLosing sleep makes you fat says Dr Mark Hyman from Ultra Wellness

Besides eating whole foods and moving your body, getting enough sleep is the most important thing you can do for your health.  Sleep deprivation makes you fat and it leads to depression, pain, heart disease diabetes and much more.

A new study in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine found that people tend to overestimate the amount of sleep that they get.

Are You Getting A Good Night's Sleep?

sleep.jpgOn Dr Oz's Anti-aging Check List is getting a good night's sleep.  And today on the call with Jack Canfield and Alex Mandossian, Jack spoke about how important sleep is to be successful and that he missed putting the chapter on sleep in his latest book, The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be.

So this is what Jack had to say about sleep:

'Sleep your way to success' was the chapter that I left out of my latest book after interviewing a professor at Cornell University, an expert on sleep, who noted that more than 60% of the population are sleep deprived.  He recommended to go to bed without an alarm clock and see how much sleep you really need…go to bed a little earlier when you're doing this experiment.

Drs Oz & Roizen On Oprah With The Ultimate Anti-Aging Checklist

drs_roizen_oz.jpgDrs Oz and Roizen were on the Oprah show today discussing their anti-aging checklist. Their list included a good night's sleep, healthy food with lots of antioxidants and fiber, exercise(strength training, aerobics & stretching), meditation, following your passion, sex and vitaimins including one or two baby aspirin daily.(studies mixed for women)

It's always important to try something and see how 'your' body reacts. Just because an expert says it's good, it doesn't mean that it will work for your body.
